Accessibility
We want everyone to be able to enjoy our concerts, and to use this website.
At our concerts
If there's anything we can do to help you or someone you know come to a concert, such as seating or access, write to WhitehouseWindSymphony@gmail.com and we'll arrange it. As much notice as you can give helps, but write anyway.
We play in churches, parks, schools and historic buildings. Tell us which concert you're coming to and we'll describe the space: parking, steps, restrooms and how far the walk is.
To raise a formal complaint, follow our ADA Compliance Grievance Procedure. It sets out how a complaint reaches the Board and how it is handled.
On this website
We build and test this site against WCAG 2.2 Level AA.
- Text and background colors are measured for contrast. Body text and links exceed 7:1 (Level AAA).
- The whole site works from the keyboard alone, with a visible focus outline on every control, and a "skip to main content" link as the first stop on each page.
- Images that carry meaning have alt text. Decorations, like the gold staff lines between sections, are hidden from screen readers.
- Everything works by touch and keyboard; nothing depends on a mouse.
- Animation is minimal, and switches off when your device asks for reduced motion.
- The site follows the text size you set on your phone or in your browser, and fits a phone screen without sideways scrolling, even at 200% text.
- Our program books are published as PDFs with real, selectable text, so a screen reader can read them.
Where we know we fall short
- Concert program PDFs are laid out for print. Their reading order is usually sensible, but they aren't formally tagged for accessibility. If you'd like a program in another format, ask and we'll send it.
- Livestream recordings on YouTube use automatic captions, which handle speech reasonably and music poorly.
